Making the Case for AI-Powered CDI: How Every Size System Can Adopt AI Seamlessly

AI is rapidly entering the CDI space, but many departments face doubters or detractors on their journey to modernize. CDI leaders are navigating real concerns, from vendor hype to fears that AI could disrupt workflows or replace clinical expertise. When implemented thoughtfully, AI can become a powerful partner and enabler to skilled teams, helping CDI teams uncover missed documentation opportunities, strengthen physician education, and focus their time on the highest-value clinical work.

In this session, Allison Van Doren, RN, JM, CCDS, CDIP, AVP revenue cycle, CDI, at Jefferson Health, will share how her team successfully introduced AI-assisted chart review across one of the nation’s largest CDI departments that spans 32 hospitals and more than 100 CDI specialists. Attendees will learn how Jefferson addressed staff fear and skepticism, deployed the technology across multiple EHR platforms, and used AI insights to improve query opportunities, clinician education, and documentation capture—offering practical lessons for CDI leaders navigating their own AI journeys.

Learning Objectives:

  • Leading through change management: Identify common sources of skepticism and pushback around implementing AI in CDI programs and strategies for addressing staff concerns about job displacement and workflow disruption.
  • Adopting digital transformation: Apply change management strategies for implementing CDI technology across large, complex health systems, including environments with multiple EHR platforms.
  • Implementing AI-enabled workflows: Explain how AI-assisted chart review can augment CDI specialists, enabling earlier identification of documentation opportunities and allowing teams to focus on higher-value clinical work.
  • Educating CDI teams and clinicians: Leverage AI insights to strengthen clinician education and documentation practices, helping close specialty-specific documentation gaps and capture opportunities earlier in the care journey.
