News: Proposals for new ICD-10-PCS codes now available for public review and comments
The public ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee Meeting, held on September 15-16, 2026, hosted a discussion of 23 proposals involving procedure code topics, all of which were in some way related to the X tables for New Technology.
Seventeen proposals have a new technology add-on payment application submitted for fiscal year 2027 consideration or have an application in the process of being submitted. The public has until November 13, 2026, to submit comments on the updates being considered for implementation on October 1, 2027. The following are some of the requests for this implementation date:
Visualization guidance for pressure offloading during patient repositioning
Pressure injuries contribute to approximately 60,000 deaths annually in the United States. A proposed approach for prevention through visually guided pressure offloading enables nurses to monitor pressure in real time, adjust patient positioning, and verify effective pressure relief at the bedside. However, CMS maintains that routine repositioning and turning are general nursing care activities that do not warrant a dedicated ICD-10-PCS code or separate reporting.
Measurement of volumetric blood flow in peripheral vessels
Chronic limb-threatening ischemia, a severe form of peripheral artery disease, can lead to amputation and cardiovascular complications. A proposed ICD-10-PCS code in table XXE would specifically capture real-time measurement of volumetric blood flow during peripheral endovascular procedures, providing a direct assessment of blood flow to help guide treatment decisions. Currently, facilities report peripheral arterial or venous flow measurement using codes 4A03351 and 4A04351, respectively.
Monitoring of peritoneal cavity using electrode sensors
Anastomotic leaks after colorectal resections can cause serious complications and death. A proposed sensor-equipped drainage system would enable real-time monitoring of tissue healing at the surgical connection, addressing a gap in current postoperative surveillance. CMS recommends a new ICD-10-PCS code in table XX2 to capture placement of the system, which is not currently reported separately.
Computer-aided assessment of acute abdominopelvic pathology
Abdominal pain accounts for approximately 8–10% of adult emergency department visits, and delayed diagnosis of acute abdominopelvic conditions can affect patient outcomes. Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted analysis of abdominal and pelvic CT scans could help identify urgent abnormalities and support timely diagnosis. CMS recommends a new ICD-10-PCS code in table XEZ to separately capture this computer-aided assessment, which is also not currently reported separately for inpatient hospital coding.
Computer-aided monitoring of urine output with diuretic and saline administration
Heart failure is a leading cause of hospitalization among older adults, and diuretic therapy is central to treating acute decompensated heart failure. A new device uses real-time physiological monitoring to tailor diuretic and saline administration, helping remove excess fluid while supporting kidney function. Although diuretic administration can be coded with ICD-10-PCS code 3E0337Z, monitoring urine output during therapy is not separately reported. CMS recommends a new dedicated code in table XX2 for procedures using the monitoring device.
Administration of anzutresgene autoleucel
Melanoma rates have more than doubled over the past 30 years, driving interest in targeted immunotherapies. Anzutresgene autoleucel (anzu-cel) is an investigational, personalized T-cell therapy designed to target PRAME, a tumor-associated antigen expressed in melanoma and other cancers. Although its administration can currently be reported using ICD-10-PCS codes XW033FA or XW043FA, CMS recommends a new dedicated code in table XW0 for the therapy.
