Quality and CDI: One facility takes both roles to heart

In 1994, the Indiana Heart Institute decided to implement a dedicated cardiovascular quality data abstraction team. In 1996, the hospital expanded the team’s duties to include CDI responsibilities. This revised team obtained the information necessary for coding, as well as all the information needed for clinical registries.

“Our model is that we have one person in the chart collecting all the core measures. We don’t have it separated out [from CDI],” says Jill Brocker, RN, MSN, CCS, CCDS, director of quality services at Indiana Heart Institute in Indianapolis.
